Hello! San Francisco resident looking for a lighter weight hill climber

Hi there,

As the title says, I’m an SF resident looking for a lightweight scooter that can handle hills. I ask for lighter weight (<75lbs) because I live up a few floors in an apartment. I’d like to be able to take the scooter just about anywhere in town, and get to 30mph+. I’d like to be able to safely ride in all-weather and at night.

My max budget would be about $2500, but could budge for the right pick. I’m not a newbie, and have been riding these streets my whole life.

Backfats there’s a lot of options to choose from but you’ll have to get dual motors because of the hills it’s a must

Its all depends on your personal weight. usual dual motor scooters can drive on montains. and weight can be between 30 and 40 kg.
for driving on night you need good front light and that u perfect know your route.

ok 86 kg thats kinda easyweight.
as itsaqua mentioned you need dual motor , something starting from 2 × 1000 w
with proper front light for night, only you must understand that only few scooters can drive in heavy rain.
and if you want ride like 50 km per hr you need proper gear , i would say bike gear, helmet aprox 200 usd at least , glowes , 50 usd , also back protector , and kneel protectors , so you must understand that proper gear gonna cost you 400 usd atleast , so now your budget is less than 2100 usd just saying.

Thanks for the advice, I appreciate it. Yeah, I’ve got motorcycle gear I can use. If the weather is super heavy I usually take a cab anyway.

As far as brands, I was looking at Apollo, Mercane, Mantis, and a few others I can’t quite remember atm. Do you (or anyone else) have any suggestions?

Maybe Apollo needs another year before they can be the dealer and product we all would hope they would be. It seems every time i jump on mine there is a new issue lately, plus the new ones are coming with defective chargers and other issues. Read al the reviews before buying. Don’t just take my comment here

You might want to check out Fluidride in the city. They can answer any of your questions, sell new and used/refurbished scooters, plus they offer test rides before you buy.

Yes on their new flagship Apollo city pro - search you Tube there is a few video. Apollo was replacing them with generic 5 A fast chargers because of their backlog to replace them. That in turn is convenient but maybe not the best for your long term battery cycle lifetime performance. (Apparently the problem has been addressed with new scooters) But that was what they said about the necks breaking on V2’s but they still had some of those break.

Get a cheep used one that doesn’t go past 18mph until you know how to ride it. Small wheels, fast speed, idiot drivers and new to scooters will send you to SF General really fast. It takes about 3 - 6 months at least to learn how to ride and anticipate the road. Foggy streets, trolley tracks, step hills, pin needles make riding a challenge. Even after riding a motorcycle for 10 years it was still an adventure.

randyksf “cheap used ones that don’t go past 18 mph” won’t make it up the hills in SF and @Backfats isn’t a newbie to scooters meaning he’s experienced and knows how to ride in SF.

ItsAqua everyone has own estimations about what is cheap. but i agree to randy that need learn especialy for night rides.

Thank you everyone for the advice! I ended up nabbing a Kaabo Mantis V2 and am very pleased.
