Hello Chuck, Justin, Trina, Paul, and the rest of the fantastic crew at ESG, along with all fellow enthusiasts of this site. I’m Barry, residing in the northern suburbs of Detroit, MI. While I’ve never owned an electric scooter before, I’ve recently spent a considerable amount of time riding a small manual kick scooter. Now, I’ve decided it’s time to get a serious scooter. I’m retired and have a background in toolmaking/machining and sales, with degrees in philosophy and computer technology. My active lifestyle involves cycling, walking, resistance exercise, and, most importantly, playing Pickleball, which has inspired me to write a novel titled “My Pickleball Summer - Competition, Friendship, and Obsession Between the Lines.” I’m also working on another novel that explores the tragic consequences of climate change, particularly focusing on the over-reliance on fossil fuel and internal combustion engines.
I’m a research addict, constantly delving deep into various topics—partly due to my writing pursuits. Lately, electric scooters have captivated my interest, and I’ve been consuming articles, interviews, videos, reviews, forums, technical literature, and specs on this fascinating gadget. Sometimes, I wonder if the thrill of researching will outshine the excitement of making a final decision. Out of all the resources I’ve explored during my extensive research, I must say that the ESG site, broadcasts, and videos have been the most comprehensive, detailed, thorough, and captivating.
My car (a sporty compact) is only used and required for about 2 or 3 months each year, typically from mid-December to the end of February. For the rest of the time, it sits in my garage with storage insurance, except for emergencies. The substantial annual savings I’ve accumulated from insurance, gas, and maintenance expenses over the past 2 years have provided enough funds to invest in a high-quality scooter. Therefore, the scooter will serve multiple purposes for me. Its primary role will be transportation, catering to short errands, shopping trips, and visits to parks. Additionally, it will be essential for recreation, especially for on-road trips covering distances of 35 miles or more, and occasional light off-road adventures. Moreover, it will offer a novelty aspect, as I expect it to be enjoyable to maintain, upgrade, and admire as a fancy toy, garnering attention from people on the street and, particularly, other Pickleball players. It might even overshadow my favorite high-end custom recumbent bicycle in terms of allure.
Understanding that I’ll have to make compromises on critical elements like range, power (as I’m not a speed enthusiast), features, ride comfort, build quality, ease of maintenance, durability, upgradeability, safety, appearance, and price, I have specific criteria in mind. Consequently, only a few scooters meet my requirements, and I’ve prepared a detailed analysis, comparing and rating them in every relevant aspect. I’d be delighted to share this comprehensive assessment on an appropriate forum thread. Please note that I’ll be writing in English for ease of communication.
