Compare to Shared Scooters

TL;DR Suggestion: Fully test and review the shared scooters so they can be included in the side-by-side comparison grids and search filters (by weight, top speed, hill speed, etc) to help new people transition into scooter ownership.

I’ve just finished researching using this site, and made my first scooter purchase. I originally thought I wanted an e-bike after moving to San Francisco, but after using the Lyft electric bikes, Lime scooters, and Spin scooters, I decided the scooter was my preference by far.

I noted however that none of the shared scooters can make it up SF hills. Plus most of the old knackered Lime scooters have nasty stem wobble, bad brakes, etc. Toward the end of the battery, these scooters wheeze along uselessly.

All of my research was based around these couple ‘test drive’ models that I’ve become familiar with. I know that I want certain relative upgrade in power and braking. However, there’s scant little data here on ESG to compare my known scooter experience with all of the great review and test data.

Wonderful suggestion and we had actually talked about doing this, but shelved in favor of focusing on doing scooter reviews for a large segment of scooters that we are missing.

Will definitely thing about revisiting. What specifically would you have found most useful – performance tests? Or just comparison in general?

For my purposes, I though “hey… I like these rental scooters, I should get my own!”

Then I immediately saw the variety of available models, and personally, my primary thought was that it must be better on the hills in order to be worth more than $400 to me. Further, everything that I know about e-scooters I know from rented Lime and Spin, so that’s my entire knowledge sphere. Every metric of size, weight, suspension, range, etc I wanted to gauge against what I know.

In the end, basic metrics, performance tests, and subjective reviews would all have been welcome. But I felt driven off your site into my own notes mostly by the basic fact that Lime and Spin couldn’t appear on the comparison grid.

scoot-sf Hmmm. Thanks for the suggestion. Definitely something we could add into the database to get some of the standard shared models on there. We’ll have to see what’s available and grab some for testing.

I’ve actually been in touch with a few of the companies recently about this, but then we received a bunch of scooters we had been waiting to review and jumped on those. Having managed repair warehouses for two different shared scooter companies, and now having tested so many scooters myself, I’m super curious to see how they stack up. The interest levels from the various companies have covered the enthusiasm spectrum. Ideally, I’d want to test them all within a week or two and film them together, but the more I look at the logistics, I think we may need to test them individually and then make content when we hit critical mass. Our testing is standardized, so the data would be just as good. But it would be amazing to do some side by side shots too.
