Wolf King will not charge unless I let it “cool down” for about an hour

So when I bring my Wolf King in after a ride (15-20 miles) and plug it in, the light on the charger immediately turns green as if it is fully charged. If I unplug it and turn the scooter on, the display momentarily reads “100%” before slowly dropping back down to the real reading. The scooter will only take a charge after I let it sit for about an hour.

Possibly related: The charge level on the display fluctuates a lot while riding. Yesterday I was almost 20 miles in on a ride and looked down at the display and it read “100%”. I got off and let it sit for about 3 minutes and the level slowly dropped back down and settled on 40%.

Fluid Freeride doesn’t seem to know whats going on and they want to replace my scooter but I thought I’d check here before going through the trouble of packing and shipping a 100 lb scooter. Thank you

C41006 Many li-ion powered devices with smarter battery management systems, won’t let you charge the battery when too hot, b/c it shortens battery life. Not being able to charge immediately after a long (and especially high energy consuming ride) could actually be hidden smart feature that is poorly documented / understood by retailers.

As for battery fluctuations on the display: this is not unheard of, but I’m a bit surprised you’re having such large ones. All batteries will have effects that cause incorrect voltage/battery % to be reported. The throttle displays aren’t intelligent enough to know what’s going on. Some effects are voltage sag after a long discharge, temperature-related, and just lag for the display to update voltage/% remaining estimates.

I haven’t seen this on our Wolf King at all. We don’t have a ton of miles on ours, but have put it through some pretty tough torture tests, like several back to back near 60 mph runs for ½ mile at a time.

I would check all of the connectors between the display and the motor controller. I’d also unplug and re-seat the main battery cables. It’s possible that there is a connection that’s giving intermittant problems. Make sure to clear it with Fluid before opening the deck though. You don’t want to void warranty by going in there. (I don’t know what the policy is)
