Scooters with tension in the steering?

Just got my first scooter - INMOTION Climber - and have been riding it everywhere. A few days ago, I hurt myself pretty bad on it. I was going full-speed and glanced behind me to check traffic, and my body unconsciously turned the steering to follow my head, which shot the scooter leftward and then down to the ground with me flying over it.

Anyway, it got me thinking - why is it so easy to turn the steering all the way in a split second? I almost never want that ability anyway. What if there was tension in the steering so that it provided increasing resistance the further you turned it, and also made it naturally return to center when not explicitly pushed out of position?

Are there any scooters made this way? Is there a term for that feature?

I did the same thing last year while screwing around with my phone volume. I was live on Streamyard with group of on-line friends I know so the fall is captured on YT although not much to see. It was so quick. Luckily i had my armored jacket and helmet, knee protection, and one glove on. The other hand of course got cut. And a few days later my hip/thigh area bruised up and hurt…
I find if your going to let go of your handlebars with one hand (to take a fly out of your helmet or in your ear) for a second or look around you really need to make sure no bumps ahead and sink down, bend your knees a little, plant yourself which steadies your motion. Or just don’t do it, the small wheels on scooters don’t make it too stable compared to other forms of transport.

That would be a steering damper you are thinking of, and they’re generally only used on fast scooters to prevent death wobble at high speeds.

What you did is user error, I’m afraid.
You will no longer do that after practice and riding for while.

You can also get some mirrors which will get rid of the need to turn your head to see what’s near you.

I thought about looking into mirrors, but aside from adding even more weight (I can barely carry it now), it will also make a game of Operation to go through narrow hallways or stairways.

Maybe rear-view glasses? 🙂
