Can you leave a scooter battery connected to a charger when the charger is off?

Hi all, I’m in Italy and just had to buy the new Piaggio 1 Active for getting around town. I often return to the UK for several months at a time. On my last return the battery was dead. I decided to purchase a wifi plug that switches on and off remotely. Leaving the battery connected to the charger I can then charge it say every month for a few hours then switch it off. Does anyone know if this is feasible and is damage likely to occur to either battery or charger? Any thoughts welcome.

IanardoHIanardo you shouldn’t leave a battery fully charged if you are away for a few months it will damage the battery and degrade its lifespan. If you are going to be leaving away for a few months charge your scooter to 50% to keep the battery from degrading. Don’t leave it fully charge because that will harm the battery as well.

That is a great idea. be nice if it could shut off automatically though after a set time period.

I use a simple light timer and charge at night as well because where i live our electricity is charged at a lower rate in the evening hours. So run my dryer then as well… The next morning i just shut off the power bar the timer is plugged into

a lithium battery prefers cold temperature and when left alone will loose its max charge slowly.

The rate of loss is the same % no matter how much charge it has.

This means if it looses %50 in a year and the battery is fully charged then you loose half your battery.

If you store the battery and it is half charged then you will only loose 25% of the full battery

It is recommended to store with less than a half charge. About 40% charged and in a cold place. Take it out and ride half a mile every 2-3 months.

In heat it also looses charge capacity at a much faster rate

I’d recommend keeping it disconnected from your charger whenever you are not actively charging it.

adamwelch Hi I am aware of the charge and discharge situation. My question is: can you leave a battery connected to a charger with the charger switched off? Nobody seems to be able to answer this question. The reason is I leave the scooter for up to 4 months and want to remotely charge on say a two month basis but it has to remain connected to the charging device. I can switch the unit on/off by wifi. Thanks.

oh and it does not loose that much in a year if its stored correct. Just an example with easy numbers to understand

This question arose because I left the battery for 4 months at 80% charge, when I returned after 4 months the battery was dead. I now read you must charge it periodically even when not in use. Hence the idea of remotely switching on the charger (already connected to the battery) say every 6 weeks for a few hours. Trying to maintain maybe a 50% charge. Problem is the charger would always be connected to the battery but there would be no power to the charger. The charger tells you when the battery is charged so it can’t be overcharged. My thought is if the charger is switched off but left connected it shouldn’t be a problem? That’s what I’m unsure about. The battery is similar to a small car battery. It’s for a Piaggio one active (Vespa) scooter.

what is 5% of 100? What is 5% of 40?

Regardless how much you charge It. If yoi do not use it. Having a charge above 40% is counter productive

the battery looses a % over time and the higher its charged .. the faster it dies.
