Advice for an old guy

Hello.
In spring I bought a Hover-1 Highlander scooter for $200 (refurbished) and got fairly hooked fairly quickly. I actually got it expecting my 3 teenage girls to ride it or even take to college with them. The girls have almost no interest but i sure do. I now would like to buy a more substantial scooter but don’t know what features are important or what brands and makes would be the best fit.

I am 54 years old, 180ish pounds and i live in Wisconsin. My main use (besides just scootin’ around) is i take it about 6 blocks to work and about a mile to the grocery store on a combination of streets and sidewalks.

The Hover brand doesn’t seem to be mentioned anywhere and i think it is a Best Buy brand. When i first got it i was sure i would kill myself on it. After tightening a lot of things it is much better but I can tell it is not a top of the line brand.

I would not be afraid to spend $1,000 or more to find a scooter but don’t need to spend that much I have seen the reviews and am paralyzed by the choices. I am struggling to even narrow it down.

If anyone has any advice i would really appreciate it.

kschiegg what do you want on your new scooter? Like more range or speed? You don’t wanna end up with scooter regret later trust me it doesn’t feel good feels like you wasted your money.

I’m 51 and 220. My first escoot was, and still is, a Apollo Ghost dual motor. I love the thing and use it the same way you intend to. It was a tad higher than your $1000 price point but I have zero regrets with it. I’m curious to see what others suggest you look into.
Side note, I got caught in the rain today and rode 4 miles home in it. And I ran over a broken bottle as well. Hope the Ghost survived the rain and my tires still have air in the morning!

ScOOter, The Apollo Ghost looks amazing and it is exactly the kind of suggestion i was looking for when i said I could go more than $1,000. To be honest i am a little intimidated by it. The 18MPH i get now is slower (and more boring) than i would like, but i worry your 36 is too fast. You can say i don’t have to go 36MPH but I know i would. Good luck with your tires.

ItsAqua, I am hoping to improve the range and speed but i think almost any will (I think i have 9 mi range and 18MPH). I think i am mostly looking for an upgrade in quality all the way around. I don’t know how to describe it other than to say i think the one i have now is “loose” in a lot of areas. Tightening everything i could find took care of some of the “play” in the steering but I think a better scooter would not have any. It is a lot of fun to ride but i think would be even better with an upgrade.

kschiegg I would recommend getting a scooter that goes around 30+ mph and having dual motors for that extra power to get up hills. Suspension is a must have. There are plenty of options to choose from and I highly encourage you to wait a bit around the Christmas time because there might be some deals going on. Voro Motors is offering 4 year warranty on there scooter and that’s a great deal so check them out.

Get an Apollo as long as you can live with their sub par service assistance, seemingly endless QC issues that have subsequent “upgrades” as they call them, for you to to install, and depending on the model, real world delivery dates up to several months from the initial expected delivery date. Plus, they seem to have hired an on line reputation team now, that protects their brand by attacking unhappy owners with valid complaints with fake scooter owners with no content new accounts trying to invalidate your concerns. My favorite ones being with the English replies with the obvious Canadian French as a first language sentence structure. (Head office of Apollo is Quebec)

kschiegg, I rarely take the Ghost outta gear 2. Come to think about it I find 25 fast enough for me and that’s 1st gear. I do wind it out on open/empty streets but its rare for me. And don’t worry about it being too fast. Just take your time learning in ECO mode and buy some decent gear.

I almost purchased a Emove Cruiser and still think that would have served me just fine. But the dual motors are just so fun to ride.

It seems every escooter has quality or customer support issues. If I would do it again it’d be a toss up between my Ghost or a Kaabo. I went direct thru Apollo. I’ve heard bad things about everyone, no matter who. Voro sucks, Fluid sucks, Apollo sucks. Everyone. I picked Apollo because I know people who actually own them and got their honest feedback. Not saying my Ghost is the best value or the worst, it just fits my needs. That Wolf King GT is pretty nice though.
