WHAT is best scooter for....

HI im looking to buy my first scooter for school in NYC that work best for me;

700 $, min 230 (approx) pounds, can take rain, disc brakes, pneumatic tires.

I was looking into the Apollo city but its just too expensive for me, what would be the ideal electric scooter?

I agree with DrScootLittle that the Air is looking interesting and in your price range.

JoshKramer For scooters on the market today, I’ve got a few options, but all have drawbacks:

Segway Ninebot Max: $799 US (above your price range), 220 lbs max weight limit (slightly above request), but bomb proof with very solid water resistance, range, etc. Very hard to beat this scooter and this is the one I’d recommend most strongly. There is a smaller, cheaper G30LP version, but for only slight reduction in price you’re getting quite a bit less (and has smaller, less comfortable deck).
FFR Horizon: Again, I’d spring for the 13 Ah edition which will be a bit above your price range, but there I a 10 Ah edition that is under. Very good portability, speed, range on this model. This won’t perform as well in the rain than the Max b/c smaller tires, rear is airless (not pneumatic) which just don’t grip as well when wet, and only the rear wheel provide any type of braking (drum + regen). Scooter is water-resistance-ish, but no official rating so kind of at your own risk.

I was going to throw the Apollo Light on the list, b/c it used to be a little less expensive than the Horizon, but had smaller battery and less power. However, it looks like they are introducing a new model that has more premium features around $799 and we haven’t had a chance to check it out.

Apollo is coming out with two new lightweigh scooters soon. The Apollo Air wll be in your price range at $599, has a disc brake (rear only), and will have an IP54 rating for dust/water intrusion. It should be announced in the next couple weeks. We’re working on a review for the Air and the Air Pro right now.

Do pneumatic tires get flats alot, how hard is it to change one?

JoshKramer Definitely a risk and somewhat varies from scooter to scooter. Some seem very prone to getting pinch flats (inner tube gets pinched against the rim and tears).

A lot of the time you can just slime the tires and if you get a puncture and not have to remove/replace the inner tube. Tire slime won’t work if you get a pinch flat.

Changing tires/tubes is definitely a bit of work and more difficult than on a bicycle.

Overall, I think pneumatic tires are worth it, especially tubeless pneumatic tires which tend to be less flat prone and slime nearly always works for fixing punctures. Downside is that they are really hard to change compared to pneumatic tubed tires.

justin I was told that on tubeless tires you’re not suposed to use slime because you can make an unclean-able mess of the inner rim. Is that not the case?

Fluid Freeride Horizon and Emove Touring are in that price range and come recommended by the ESG team.
